Anyway...got this from my friend. Now I know why it's Haram to celebrate V day
Celebrating Valentine’s Day
Due to the pitiful state which the Ummah of Muhammad (may God praise him) is in, due to the lack of knowledge of Muslims about their religion, and due to the high regard which some Muslims hold for Western thought and culture, we see that a hideous practice which contradicts the very principles of chastity and honour in Islam has crept into many Muslim societies.
Many people do not realise the origins and consequences of this shameful celebration, but rather blindly follow its rites and customs. In recent years, a new phenomenon has spread among the Muslim youth, males and females alike which does not bode well. This is manifested in their imitation of the Christians in their celebration of Valentine’s Day.
The history of Saint Valentine
There is a lot of debate among scholars about the origins of Valentine’s Day that will probably never be able to disentangle all of the cultural and religious threads in order to reconstruct a complete and coherent story. However, there are a number of speculations which are reasonably sound. Saint Valentine is a name which is given to two of the ancient "martyrs" of the Christian Church. It was said that there were two of them, or that there was only one, who died in Rome as the result of the persecution of the Gothic leader Claudius, c. 296 CE. In 350 CE, a church was built in Rome on the site of the place where he died to perpetuate his memory.
In early years, Roman Emperor Claudius II imposed a ban on marriages because too many young men were dodging the draft of entering army by getting married. This decree was opposed by Saint Valentine who started to perform secret marriages. He was imprisoned and sentenced to death. While awaiting execution, young lovers visited him with notes about how much better love is than war — the first “valentines.”
In prison, he (Saint Valentine) fell in love with the jailer's daughter and sent her notes signed “from your Valentine.”, but according to Christian laws, priests and monks were forbidden to marry or fall in love. However, he is still regarded highly by the Christians because of his steadfastness in adhering to Christianity when the emperor offered to pardon him if he forsook Christianity and worshipped the Roman gods and then he would be one of his closest confidantes and his son-in-law. But Valentine refused this offer and preferred Christianity, so he was executed on 14 February 270 CE. The Pope designated the day of the death of Saint Valentine, February 14, 270 CE, as a festival of love.
So should Muslims celebrate Valentine’s Day?
As Muslims, it is encouraged for us to know the hukum of something before doing it and of course it is important to know the meaning behind Valentine’s Day before celebrating it. After knowing the origin, we will realise that Valentine’s Day is a festival which goes back to Roman times and not Islamic times, that it is something which belongs exclusively to the Christians, not to Islam, and the Muslims have absolutely no share and no part in it.
As the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said – “Every nation has its Eid,” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari and Muslim). This means that every nation should be distinguished by its festivals. If the Christians have a festival and the Jews have a festival, which belongs exclusively to them, then no Muslim should join in with them, just as he does not share their religion or their direction of prayer. Statistics also indicate that Valentine’s Day is second only to Christmas in popularity. So it is clear that the “Feast of Love” is one of the festivals of the Christians and that it is second only to the festival of Christmas, the celebration of the birth of the Messiah. So it is not permissible for Muslims to join in the celebrations of this date, because we are commanded to differ from them in their religion, customs and other things that belong exclusively to them, as is stated in the Qur'an and Sunnah and scholarly consensus.
Kolallahu Ta’ala fil Quran:
1) “And follow not (O man say not, or do not witness not) that of which you have no knowledge. Verily! The hearing, and the sight, and the heart, of each of those one will be questioned (by Allah).”(Al-isra’:36)
2) “And even if you were to bring to the people of the scripture (Jews and Christians) all the Ayat (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs , revelation, etc), they would not follow your Qiblah. And they will not follow each other’s Qiblah. Verily, if you follow their desires after that which you have received of knowledge (from Allah), then indeed you will be one of the Zalimun (polytheists, wrong-doers, etc)” (Al-Baqarah: 145)
3) And the Prophet (pbuh) told us that groups of his ummah would follow the enemies of Allah in some of their rituals and customs, as it says in the hadeeth of Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), who narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) said:
“You will certainly follow the ways of those who came before you, span by span, cubit by cubit, until even if they were to enter a lizard’s hole, you would follow them.” We said, “O Messenger of Allah, (do you mean) the Jews and Christians?” He said, “Who else?” (Narrated by al-Bukhari)
4) The prophet(pbuh) said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” (narrated by Ahmad and Abu Dawood)
Islam emphasises highly on LOVE, but why should we follow the non-Muslims to celebrate our love on the 14th of February? Of course some may argue or find this trivial, but we wont realise the fact that these are the small things that will eventually pull us away from being closer to Allah. Nauzubillah.
