When I first saw the ad for Live Earth, I thought hey cool.But after a while, I had a 2nd opinion about it. Isn't it hypocritical?And trust me,I'm not alone.(read this)
It hit me when I saw Noami Campbell as one of the ambassador. It is so hypocritical to get stars who are part of the problem. What do I mean? Well first of all, Naomi is not much of a role model, so taking her to represent Live Earth is a joke. Secondly, these stars are also the very people who participate in massive conspicuous consumption. And we all know very well(thanks to media) when they consume, they consume in style which also spells lots of electricity,power,fuel and whatnots used.These are the very people who bought (insert no.)millions of dollar mansion which boast 10-20(or even more) rooms when they are only 1/2/3 of them living in them. And jet here and there in their private planes. So tell me isn't there an irony here? And it's not only the stars that I am critical of. The concert itself I am critical too. Do you know how much electricity they need to have the concert and please 7 continents, 24hours! Can you imagine how much electricity is going to be pumped in. And, that's only when the concert starts, what about during the mobilisation and preparations for the concerts itself for the past few days. So don't blame me for being hypocritical, blame the facts.
But I have to admit, by having this concert, it makes Saving the Earth hip and cool. By having the stars, ya...people take notice. I took notice. But rather noticing the stars,I'm fascinated with the fact that they speak of coz I find myself switching almost everything off in the house this past 2 weeks when electricity is not needed.
I guess the concert is a double edged sword for me. I'm torn between the benefit and the hypocrisy of it all.I am glad that they are making waves with their message to the world yet I can't help but snigger at the contradictions.
But at the end of the day, I guess I am ok with the event. If it's gonna make people aware and help out in the run why not, I say. So people by all means, just please save the earth. Wear green,use green and be green. Don't deny your responsibility. It is an neccessity,not something you are obliged to do.
